THE BRAM STOKER SOCIETY NEWSLETTER January 2009 DUBLIN: ONE CITY, ONE BOOK 2009 "The chosen book for the 2009 Dublin: One City, One Book is Dracula by Irish author Bram Stoker. "Now entering its fourth year, Dublin: One City, One Book is a project designed to encourage everyone in the city to read the same book during the month of April each year. The project promotes reading in a city which boasts one of the world’s greatest literary heritages including four Nobel Laureates. "Dracula was written in 1897, and has been translated into many langauges. It has been the inspiration for many other works, and has been widely adapted for the stage and film. "Abraham 'Bram' Stoker was born on the 8 November 1847 at 15 Marino Crescent (then Clontarf, now Fairview) on Dublin’s northside. He died in London on 20 April 1912." A full schedule of events will follow. www.dublinonecityonebook.ie THE NEW ANNOTATED DRACULA "Dracula has gripped readers since its first publication in 1897. While the book has been studied by scholars in virtually every academic discipline, none have accepted Bram Stoker's declaration that the work was based on historical fact. For the first time, Klinger examines all of the evidence, both internal and external, including contemporary travel books, scientific texts, Victorian encyclopedias, as well as Stoker's notes for the narrative and the original manuscript itself (which is owned by a private, anonymous collector). "Les Klinger focuses his critical eye and keen wit on Bram Stoker's classic novel, Dracula, in The New Annotated Dracula, with Introduction by Neil Gaiman (W.W. Norton: October 2008, hardcover, $39.95)." www.annotateddracula.com/dracula |
