When the opportunity arose to write something weird about a real location, my choice was already made years ago. I've long been fascinated by the way modern architecture seems designed to promote unease; the living spaces contained within our current boxy structures seem to make one feel distinctly uncomfortable. And after conducting a structural survey of the car park in Gateshead in my twenties, the germ of the idea has always stayed with me to do something fictional with the experience. The writer Joel Lane said to me recently that he'd like to se me try a sort of post-modern ghost story set in a thoroughly modern building, and when Brian mentioned the Haunted History booklets to me, the project simply clicked into place. It's my belief that ghosts, if they do exist, would not necassarily limit themselves to old buildings and ancient sites. They would also wander the cramped rooms and sweep across the highrise vistas of the new cities we have built over the old towns and villages, their muted apparitions locked in concrete and steel . . .
